Matching Pergola and Deck Design Around a Pool

A pergola and the deck beneath it are seen as one composition. When their lines, materials and proportions agree, http://freestyler.ws/user/713450/waveoutdoorspools the space looks resolved. When they ignore each other, the pergola can look perched on the deck rather than part of it.

Align with deck lines

Deck edges, borders and pattern lines create a grid. Placing pergola posts on those lines, or centering the pergola on a deck zone, ties the two together. Posts that land randomly in the middle of paving patterns can look careless.

Let the deck define the room

The deck area beneath a pergola can be marked by a border, a pattern change or a slight shift in material, reinforcing the pergola as an outdoor room. That definition helps people understand the space's purpose.

Relate materials

A wooden pergola over a stone deck can work beautifully if the wood tone relates to something in the stone or the house. A metal pergola can echo metal railings or fixtures. Choosing materials with a shared color family or texture helps.

Proportion the pergola to the deck zone

A pergola should cover the deck area it is meant to shelter, with a little extra overhang, but not extend far beyond it. A pergola much larger than its deck zone can feel loose, while one too small leaves seating exposed.

Consider the pergola's shadow on the deck

The pergola's slats or beams cast patterns on the deck. Those shadows become part of the deck's appearance at different times of day.

Footings and deck construction

Pergola posts need footings that work with the deck's construction. Planning them together prevents conflicts, especially on raised or wooden decks.

Drainage under the pergola

If the pergola has a solid roof, its runoff lands on the deck. Planning slopes and drains for that water keeps the deck dry.

Lighting integrated in both

Lighting can be built into the pergola and the deck, such as downlights from beams and step lights in the deck. Coordinating fixtures makes the space feel unified at night.

Check from the house and above

The relationship between pergola and deck is visible from inside and from upstairs. Viewing the design from those positions helps confirm that lines and proportions agree.

When the pergola and deck are designed together, they create a single outdoor room rather than two separate pieces.
